Snake Eaters is the Top All Veterans Chess Team at the 2021 US Amateur Team South


League City, Texas (23 March 2021). Snake Eaters, the Top All Veterans Chess Team at the 2021 US Amateur Team South, finished 19th out of 39 in the February 27th and 28th online team championship. Mike Donovan (Board 1), Jim Hollingsworth (Board 2 and Team Captain), Leon Powers (Board 3), and Darryl West (Board 4) battled masters, experts and others over two days in the 156-player event. All four veterans are members of the Texas Chess Team. Hollingsworth and Powers are members of the Tarrant "Butchers" chess team and Hollingsworth is also a member of American Legion Post 379 in Bedford, Texas. West is a member of the Waco "Hogs" chess team. All four players are early registered for the US Armed Forces Open Chess Championship scheduled for 8 to 11 October 2021 in Grapevine, Texas.

The 2021 US Amateur Team South was sanctioned and rated by the US Chess Federation (US Chess), the governing body for USA national chess events. It consisted of six rounds using a game-in-60 plus 10-second increment time control. Texas Chess Association (TCA) was the sponsoring affiliate. TCA President Franc Guadalupe was Chief Organizer and Chief Tournament Director. Luis Salinus, Dallas Chess Club President, was Chief Assistant Tournament Director. Other tournament directors and staff included Glenn Panner, Brian Yang, and TCA Region III Director Robert Jones.

Texas Chess Association is a 501(c)(3) organization. Serving Texas chess players since 1935, TCA is the official US Chess state affiliate. 11,000 serious chess players fall under the TCA umbrella, more than any other state. TCA supports over 90 chess clubs and US Chess affiliates. TCA oversees ten regional and state championships involving 5,084 scholastic chess players. TCA provides stipends for Texas players selected for the Ruth Haring National Tournament of Girls Champions, the Barber Chess Championship, the Denker Chess Championship, and the U.S. Senior Championship. TCA also oversees other championships such as the Texas State and Amateur, Southwest Open, Texas Open, Texas Team, Texas Senior, Texas Armed Forces, Texas Girls, Texas Women's, Texas Quick, Texas Junior Open, Texas Junior Team, Texas Postal, and Texas Junior Invitational.
